Top 10 Polo Players To Follow This Season
31/05/2016 10:39:10

As the British polo season gets truly underway with Polo in the Park at Hurlingham Park, London (3-5 June), Horse & Hound magazine (12 May) have named Max Charlton, the 26 year old rising British star of the international polo scene, as one of their 10 to follow.

Max plays for the Black Bears and, when he is in the Uk, is based at Guards Polo Club  where they have an Ecotrack canter to help get the polo ponies fit.

He has swept up the levels with remarkable speed since beginning his career in the Pony Club.  He now holds the highest handicap of any England player, along with James Benin and Luke Tomlinson.  Charlton’s England team debut was the 2015 Coronation Cup when he helped them defeat South America.  Max looks likely to make a team re-appearance this year.

English players dominate

In all, 7 of Horse & Hound’s 10 to follow are English.  Max is joined on the list by:

James Benin (36, El Remanso), Jack Richardson (24, Cowdray Vikings), Tommy Beresford (19, Talandracas), Kian Hall (18, Dubai) and Jack Hyde (18, Zacara).

Other nationalities tipped for success in 2016 were:  the 41 year old Adolfo Cambiaso (Dubai), the 30 year old Thai, Aiyawatt (‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha (King Power)  and the 17 year old Argentine, Jose Ramon Araya (King Power).

Martin Collins – first for polo surfaces

Martin Collins sets the winning standard in polo surfaces and polo arenas, from low to high goal.  We understand that, in polo, a surface must balance the need for the ponies to go fast and turn tightly, with the need for the ball to run as smoothly as possible.

Our Ecotrack polo surface is tailormade to:

  • Be tightly packed, allowing the ball to run across the surface
  • Provide a cushioning effect which is sympathetic to the horse on a tight turn
  • Withstand the British Winter in order to facilitate off-season training, arena polo matches or tournaments

We know how tough polo can be on your ponies’ joints and how important your training canter and arena surface is to keeping your ponies sound and fit. So, our polo surfaces are designed to optimise performance by supporting the limb and hoof on the turn.
