New Bespoke Gallop Surfaces At Jackdaws 08/12/2015 11:54:42
Following the successful Long Gallops surface refurbishment undertaken by Martin Collins at Jonjo O’Neill’s Jackdaws training yard, work is also now going ahead on their short gallop.
Jonjo currently has 120 horses in training at the impressive equestrian facility, near Cheltenham, including stable stars: More of That, Holywell, Taquin de Seuil and Shut the Front Door. As of 6 December, the yard has sent out 57 National Hunt winners – a strike rate of just over 20%.
The long gallop refurbishment required: removal of the old surface, carrying out remedial works on the existing tarmac drainage layer and then re-laying a new Geltrack gallops surface designed especially for Jonjo. The bespoke-blended surface has provided Jackdaws with all weather gallops tailored to their particular needs and where the going can be altered.
Early reports from the jockeys riding up the gallops – including AP McCoy and Barry Geraghty – are uniformly favourable.
Depending on the equestrian surface maintenance regimes followed, this new all weather gallop surface can be altered to offer a deeper going , which mimics softer jumping ground, but also has the ability to be tightened up to provide a faster surface.
The 2015 Martin Collins installations at Jackdaws also included adding fibres into the schooling strips and more sand to the round gallop.
The Jackdaws’ work, masterminded by the highly experienced Martin Collins team, now continues into 2016 with the refurbishment of the drainage layer and replacing the racing surface on the 5 furlong Short Gallop.
